A few years ago, I rode this quarter horse gelding that captured my heart. He had some vices, but he and I were buddies. I still miss Zack, and consider him one of my favourite horses. So I decided I wanted to try painting him.

I really enjoyed painting Doc, one of Rachel’s horses, so I ended up trying to paint one for myself as well. I used a ceramic horse I had picked up at a yard sale. It had a chipped ear. Initially, painting on finished ceramic was more frustrating, but he turned out well.

Sometimes I like to see what would happen if I painted teeny tiny horses. And sometimes I get it in my head to see what a miniature My Little Pony toy would look like if I painted it as a normal horse.
Here they all are.

So I went to Winnipeg – well, the country really – a little over a month ago.
As always, I looked for birds.
Here is my catch, so to speak. π

A few months back someone came to me asking if I would be willing to paint her horses on Schleich figurines.
And so I went out in search of four unique models that reminded me of body shapes for each horse.
I painted four horses in total: Guinness, Doc, Pippin, and Bubbles.
Guinness

Doc

Pippin

Bubbles

Here they all are together:

I have a friend who loves a flea bitten grey, so I decided to try giving that colouring a shot.
Well, I failed miserable.
However, it turned out pretty cool lookin, even if it’s closer to being an appaloosa than a flea bitten grey.
I used a cheap no-name toy horse. I was actually super impressed by the muscle tone on the toy.

I found another cheap plastic toy Clydesdale at yet another thrift store. This one had a whole at the top of its tail, but we filled it in and sanded it down before I started working on it. Instead of a blood bay, I worked with a basic brown colour, as I would like my Clydesdales to be individuals. π

I was happy with how he turned out. I am especially fond of his shoes.

Here is a side by side comparison with the blood bay Clydesdale that I made previously. π

So about ten years ago,Β the movie My Friend Flicka, an old western from 1943, was remade for today’s world.
I never watched it. I was a huge fan of the original movie, and in fact the original book. I just really didn’t want to ruin the wonderful movie from my childhood by watching a gender swapped remake that probably felt nothing like the original.
I digress.
Breyer came out with Flicka related horses, and I managed to get my hands on one of them. I repainted it as Flicka should look from the movie in 1943.
I’m not happy with how the chestnut colour came out, but once I put some tack on her, she looked a lot better.

I’ve since replaced the English tack with Western.
Flicka is not my favourite custom. In the future I might redo her.
